Resources for Bird Identification

Audubon Bird Guide

This is a free, comprehensive bird app for your phone with over 800 species of North America.  This app will refine your search to identify a bird by showing birds normally seen in your location.  Once you have identified your bird, it will keep track of all your sightings in an updated life list.

iBird Pro

An easy-to-use electronic field guide of North America birds. This subscription app may be added to an iPhone or android. Search for information about a bird by common name to find photos, range, maps, behavior, ecology, and facts.  There is also a search that includes flight pattern, size, color, and habitat among other identifying markers to match a description to a bird’s name.

Merlin Bird ID

The Merlin app shines in song identification.  Have you ever wondered what bird is singing that lovely song or maybe making such a racket?  The bird may be hiding in a tree or up on a rooftop, so it is hard to visually identify.  This app will recognize the bird’s song and instantly identify the bird.  Merlin can also identify several birds singing at the same time, creating a list of the birds, highlighting each as it sings.  Most importantly, it is easy to use.

eBird

This free app is a resource to allow the user to create a list of birds sighted at a particular place and time.  The lists created can be submitted to this citizen-science project that gathers observations from birders around the world for purposes of research and conservation efforts.
